Orissa missed an opportunity to play Ranji Trophy quarterfinals for the second successive year when they went down to Rajasthan, conceding first-innings lead in their four-day pre-quarterfinal match, which ended in a draw on the last day at Ispat Stadium in Rourkela today.
Rajasthan took a first-innings lead of 64 runs by compiling massive total of 502 and then restricting host Orissa to 438. Electing to bat, Rajasthan struggled at 81 for four before a century each by Padam Shastri and Parthasarathy Sharma enabled them muster the huge total. Harmohan Praharaj stood out among Orissa bowlers, bagging six wickets for 149 runs.
Orissa also experienced initial setbacks in the first innings, losing four wickets for 56 runs. But an unbeaten double hundered by Asjit Jayaprakasham and a hundred by Anil Bhardwaj helped them give a strong reply to the opposition. Captain Somnath Sahoo also played a useful knock of 47.
After taking the crucial first-innings lead, Rajasthan further consolidated their position by declaring the second innings at 213 for two. Vivek Bhan Singh and Anju Mudkavi scored a century each to deny Orissa any scope for a fightback. Orissa were 37 for four in the second innings when the high-scoring match ended as draw.
